Welcome Center in Warsaw: constructing the model of an advising center for migrants supporting an integrated diverse society/ Welcome Center in Warsaw: creating model of institutional solutions for integration of foreigners in Poland.

Project of the Welcome Center, which was managed in cooperation between the Foundation for Development “Beyond Borders,” the Foundation for Social Diversity and the Foundation „Nasz Wybór,” was aimed at creating a stable advising center for migrants living in Warsaw. Starting in April of 2009, in an office at Gorskiego 3/17, right in the heart of Warsaw, a team of specialists speaking Russian, Ukrainian, French and English offered free services to foreigners, including legal, job and psychological advising. Moreover, as part of the project, the team continued to offer advice catering to specific needs of certain groups of migrants – for example to the parishioners of the Greek-Catholic Church at Miodowa Street or salesmen in Wolka Kosowska. The key element of the advising activities was the issues related to obtaining work and residence permit, but also functioning in the Polish society and knowing Polish norms or customs. In the office of the Welcome Center there were also Polish language classes, trainings, workshops and integration activities. The existence of the space also allowed migrants to organize themselves, for example a group practiced Ukrainian songs at the Center. The activity of the Welcome Center allowed to construct a model for a stable advising center and inspired many other activities happening as part of the Foundation’s current projects.

Migrant Platform of Knowledge

The goal of this project was to create a website www.migrapolis.pl providing migrants with reliable information which would in turn facilitate making first steps towards integration in Poland. The website was published at the end of 2009 in 5 language versions – in Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, Belorussian and English, thus in languages of used by the largest groups of migrants living n Poland. One can find useful information on the website regarding obtaining work and residence permit, accommodation, education, transport, crisis situations, banking or even obtaining passport for your pet. Migrapolis website allows migrants to get access to information fast and from any place in the world, which is particularly helpful for people getting ready to migrate to Poland. From its creation until the end of 2010 the website was visited by 80,000 people. Together with the advising center, the website is an element of a strategy of raising awareness about the reality of functioning in the Polish society.

Migration Career Center

This project is aimed at reducing the scale of illegal employment of foreigners in Poland and supporting Polish employers in recruiting employees with unique qualifications. At our advising center at Gorskiego 3/17 a team of specialists in the area of employment, migration and cross-cultural relations offers free services for foreigners and Polish employers. Support offered to companies and institutions includes advising on the procedure of obtaining work permit, residence permit and labor law. A team of consultants offers support to foreigners in navigating the rules, filling out documents for obtaining a work permit or a work contract and explaining exceptional cases. We also help to fill out a CV and cover letter properly, as well as provide tools necessary in looking for a job independently. Moreover, as part of the project we offer a series of special trainings about issues related to employing foreigners in Poland addressed both to employers and foreigners, co-financed by the Warsaw City Hall.
